Meet the Team
Julie Woodhouse, General Manager Julie started her time at Congham Hall in 1996 as a Receptionist. von Essen hotels bought the hotel in 1999 and Julie was promoted to Front of House Manager. It didn’t take her long to become General Manager of the hotel in 2002 where she has been ever since. Julie’s dedication, passion and vision for Congham Hall remain as strong as ever before.
Liz Newell, Regional Sales Manager Liz has worked in Sales and Marketing within the hotel industry for 15 years with her previous role being the promotion of hotels in Southern Africa. Liz joined Congham Hall in June 2008 and has been focusing on developing our corporate market from Norfolk and the surrounding counties as Congham Hall is very fortunate in that we have a strong repeat leisure clientele.
David Hammond, Head Chef David joined the von Essen collection in 2002, taking up position of Chef de Partie at the prestigious Ston Easton Park and was quickly promoted to Junior Sous Chef in 2003. By 2004 David had been offered the Junior Sous Chef’s position at the Elms Hotel in Worcester and after two successful years there, his skill recognised, he returned to Ston Easton Park as Sous Chef under Michael Parke. David now continues to develop and shine, beating 26 award winning Chefs to scoop second place in the von Essen Chef of the Year competition in 2008. His natural progression in 2009 was to Head Chef of Hunstrete House and we at Congham Hall were thrilled to take on such an experienced, exacting and experimental master of modern British cuisine in 2010.
Marlene Rasberry, Executive Housekeeper June 1983 was a special time for Congham Hall – Marlene Rasberry join’s as a kitchen porter and soon progressed to the housekeeping department. Marlene was promoted to Head of Housekeeping in 1991 and remains in this role today. Before working for Congham Hall, she worked for Jaeger as a sewing machinist which has stood her in good stead for making soft furnishings for the rooms and public areas at the hotel. Marlene makes pot-pourri from the flowers in the beautiful gardens, which then adorn the rooms and sales table. Marlene won housekeeper of the year for the Norfolk area in 2007.
Karen Malkan, Restaurant Manager Norfolk born Karen has been with Congham Hall since November 2005, her talents were spotted early and she was promoted to Assistant Restaurant Manager by June of the following year, Karen was promoted again in early 2010 to Restaurant Manager – overseeing the entire Food and beverage operation for the business. She has a keen interest in wine and has been working hard with the hotel to develop her knowledge in this area. Karen has a 2:1 in BSc Marine and Freshwater Biology and has been in the catering industry since 2000.
Claudine Swift, Senior Receptionist Claudine joined the team on reception in 2005 at just 19 years of age. Her loyalty, hard work and dedication earned her a promotion in November 2008 to her current role. Her responsibilities include ensuring the reception department is run smoothly and that every guest arrives with a warm welcome - she knows first impressions count! Claudine isn’t a keen runner so as a challenge for 2009 she ran the Flora London Marathon in an impressive 6 hours and 41 minutes. Over £2,200 was raised for CLIC sergeant, a children's charity close to her heart.
